This past weekend, while venturing into Vermont for the day, we stopped by the oh-so-lovely Ben & Jerry’s headquarters. And, not only do they have good ice-cream (albeit rather expensive), they also have a lot of fun family activities…and a very long line for the ice-cream counter.
So, while my sweetie patiently sacrificed by waiting in line, I took the kids to the playground. Both kids, after having been in the vehicle for several hours — and in anticipation of the promised sweet treat — immediately began bouncing off every available surface. After they had let off a fair amount of their energy, they began to slow down a bit and become more imaginative in their play. At this point, my dear, sweet, exuberant and friendly son began to imagine that the wooden fort was a cruise ship — on which he was the cruise director, hospitality specialist, activities director, and whatever else popped into his imagination.
I was sitting ona nearby bench watching the kids play with a couple other kids. Jonah had positioned himself at the top of the fort, right in front of the most popular climbing enterance to the fort. Meanwhile, a little girl was slowly climbing up the tire ladder to where Jonah stood. She reached the top and stood up next to Jonah who promptly proclaimed: “Welcome to the U.S Constitution…would you like to shake my hand!” He said this with such sincerity and enthusiasm that I immediately burst into laughter. I couldn’t help it. Really, I couldn’t. When Jonah glanced uncertainly my way, I called him over to the bench where I was sitting, gave him a hug, and told him how much I love him.
Where that boy’s future is headed, I have no idea…but I cannot wait to find out!!
