Easy/Quick Recipe: Life With Half the Calories

It’s Friday (or at least it will be tomorrow morning when this posts), and after not sleeping well all week, I’m tired. So although I was going to write a more serious post for today, yeah, that’s not happening.

Instead, a recipe for life, but lighter…

talk with kids.

Okay, yes, the title is a bit misleading since this has nothing to do with calories, but seriously, conversing with kids can make life seem much lighter. And that’s even better than cutting half the calories.

For instance: my kids love dessert. A lot. Awhile back, my friend posted a recipe for chocolate cake that is made with a coffee mug and the microwave. She titled the post for this recipe “Chocolate Lovers of the World Unite“. My kids have since made that title a noun. As in, Mom can we have chocolate lovers of the world unite for dessert tonight?”

Another example: Jonah has been using the computer more frequently, both for school and fun. He has his own user id on the computer, which allows us more control over what he can and cannot access without one of us constantly monitoring him. When he wants to view a website that the computer does not recognize as safe for him, he is redirected to a screen that allows him to request permission from a parent via email.

Me (checking email): Jonah, what are you trying to find at ywp [dot] com?

Jonah (with the tone of, “duh”): That’s the young writer’s program, mom.

Me: Um, no sweetie, it’s not. That website is ywp.nanowrimo.org
And what is this one here? (another short series of letters followed by [dot] com)

Jonah: the library website?

Me (now seeing the pattern): Ah, no sweetie. The thing about websites, you can’t just take the first letter of the words that you’re looking for and expect to get the right website.

Jonah: Ooohhh.

Your turn. What fun conversations have you had with kids lately?

About Sarah

I love being wife to my sweetie, mama and teacher to my three wonderful children, and friend to people near and far. I love to express myself through words. I blog to connect with others and so that someday, hopefully, my kiddos will understand who their mama was...way back when.
